TradeGo and WaveBL Complete World's First International Freight Financing Transaction Secured by eBLs

TradeGo and WaveBL have successfully completed the world's first international freight financing transaction secured by electronic bills of lading (eBLs), further expanding the use of which in shipping finance.

On the afternoon of October 28, a Chinese freight forwarder, through TradeGo, pledged eBLs issued by a leading shipping line on the WaveBL platform and received disbursements for six requested international freight financing transactions, securing funding for its day-to-day working capital needs. The transaction not only provides a practical example of how eBLs can support freight financing, but also demonstrates the importance of cross-platform eBL interoperability to the development of the digital trade ecosystem.

eBL Pledging Unlocks Ocean Freight Financing for Freight Forwarders

Freight forwarders often need to pay ocean freight charges in advance, creating a gap between cash outflows and payments received from customers. For small and medium-sized freight forwarders, recurring advance payment requirements, combined with limited access to financing and cumbersome procedures, can put pressure on working capital. The collaboration addresses this challenge by integrating eBLs into the ocean freight financing process, offering freight forwarders a new financing option.

The solution transforms static transport documents into digital assets that can be pledged as collateral, enabling their underlying value to be put to use in financing. This significantly simplifies collateral procedures and shortens the time to disbursement, providing freight forwarders with streamlined, accessible supply chain finance tools that help ease the working capital burden of advance freight payments. Meanwhile, cross-platform interoperability between TradeGo and WaveBL enables eBLs issued by shipping lines to move between the two platforms, supporting the document control and pledge arrangements required for financing. This provides funders with better support for transaction review and risk management, while making the solution more flexible and extending its market coverage.

TradeGo Enables End-to-End Digital Freight Financing

As a digital infrastructure platform for international trade, TradeGo connects the entire transaction process, from financing applications, eBL pledging and risk assessment to funding matching and fund transfers, creating an end-to-end online workflow for funders and financing applicants. Drawing on standardized digital documents and multidimensional trade data, the platform intelligently matches funding with transactions and provides risk management support throughout the transaction lifecycle, effectively linking document transfers with financing services.

The transaction broadens the scope of eBL applications, unlocking their value as trusted underlying assets for trade finance while retaining their function as documents of title, and advancing both paperless shipping and inclusive supply chain finance.

Building on this transaction, TradeGo and WaveBL will continue to deepen their collaboration and expand the reach of the financing solution to support more freight forwarders and logistics companies. With digital documents and financial services as twin drivers, the two companies will continue to explore innovative applications in shipping finance and contribute to the development of the digital trade ecosystem.
